Steps to make Baked Dahi-Bhalla Cake:

  1. Soak one cup udad daal for 3-4 hours. Make a smooth paste and allow it to rest for 10 mins.
  2. Chopp onion, green chilli, coriander.
  3. Add these ingredients into batter mix well. Add salt, 1/4 teaspoon hing, 1/4 teaspoon black pepper and mix well.
  4. Preheat the oven at 180°c for 10-15 mins. By the time grease the tins.
  5. Add 1/2 teaspoon soda into batter mix well and pour the batter into tins.
  6. Bake the tins in preheated oven at 180°c for 30 mins or untill crispy. Time can be vary according to the brand of oven.
  7. Take out the sponges and allow it to cool. (Make a note they won’t rise as the cake. And the toothpick test will not work for this udad daal sponge as it remains sticky when hot. So try once it’s cool)
  8. Now it’s time to assemble the cake. Start layering as we do in normal cake assembling. Place one layer. Apply some butter milk as we apply sugar syrup incase of normal Cake. Now add a layer of salted hung curd. Arrange all three layers like this.
  9. Pour some hung curd over the cake. Add some masala boondi, pomegranate, tamarind gud chutney. Spice it with little red chilli powder, black salt powder, chaat masala and bhuna jeera powder.. add some coriander leaves.
  10. Cool the cake in refrigerator and enjoy when cool.
